well the black paint on my tank is nearly dry. its a 72" with that teardrop style striping but i didnt do the stripeing, just black. now i`m sorry i didnt and was thinking of painting it on in silver metalic and got to thinking about doing it with the tape type graphics in case it turns out i like the strait black better.but there again can graphics be made to go with the contours of the tank or is it just for flat panels? and can it be clearcoated? or is it not cost effective to use? thanks for any help. jeff

I've seen some '72s with solid color tanks. Some look OK but that red and white pattern is hard to beat. I'm toying with the idea of doing my spare tank in the same pattern but black and white instead. I even bought extra headlight bucket, headlight ears and sidecovers with that project in mind. But in the end I think I'll probably settle on the original red and white scheme since in my opinion it's the purtiest 650 ever built.
You may be able to do the job with vinyl graphics tapes since they have a little stretch room in them. Then clear coat with a top quality coating that is impervious to gasoline. That's probably the most important consideration since no one wants to see all that work go to waste the first time a little gas gets sloshed over it. For myself, I'm going to have the tank painted with the original type pearlescent white and then have the pattern applied with the transluscent ruby red original followed by the most expensive clear coating I can get. I don't want to have to do it again for another 34 years, by which time I'll be pushing 88 and will probably start thinking about giving up riding...maybe.

pops your right about it being the purdiest paint sceme they had. my situation was that my friend the painter owed me a paint job and i didnt want to give him too much to have to do. i want to do like you did and get a spare tank and covers to paint myself. we both were custom painters in our youth but my buisy schedule keeps me from getting things done, have the tools just no time to use them. when i get the tank home i`ll shop around at these graphics services and see what they can do. thanks for the advice. jeff
