Doesn't seem to be a thread covering paint so I'll put this here.
Been surfing looking for the paint code for '72 XS2. Lots of hits that go back to '88 but nothing older that I can find. Anyone know where to find some original type paint to squirt on this thing? Powder coating is not an option. Need the same stuff they put on it to begin with.

Very often those manaufacturing paint codes are not only one paint but a combination of paints of different colours layered. What I've heard the guys done expecially with orange (and red) XS2's is to take some part with the original paint in good shape to the proffessional painter. They have tools and methods to dig out how it was painted and which of the today's solutions is closest match. An be prepared to pay for that....
I suspected as much, Jusupov. This red appears to be somewhat translucent and the underlying white is not just plain white, it has a pearlescent appearance to it and I think it contributes to the resultant depth of the red. I tried my hand at candy apple red with my Bridgestone and it was that way. Most frustrating rattle can paint job you can do. Looked perfect for about 1 minute and then it would "blush." I know that's related to the humidity and that there are additives that will compensate by slowing drying time...but with a rattle can it's not possible to add the retarding compound.
I have two tanks, two sets of side covers, two sets of headlight ears and two headlight buckets. I think I'll take the best of the two sets to a hot rod painting shop here in town that does nice work and see what they can do. I know it will cost a bunch...don't care. No wife, no kids = doesn't matter. The other set I want to do myself in black/white instead of red/white. I suspect she'd look fine in black, too, and then I won't have to rush the paint shop for the red stuff. Besides, I'm just itching to try out a HVLP paint gun.

The paint under the tank badges should be unfaded and the original color. Red paint (as you've no doubt noticed) is really prone to fading from sunlight. A pro painter might be your best bet.
There was a thread regarding duplicating Yamaha's metallic and pearlescent paints on the micapeak XS650 list a while back. You might consider joining that list and posing the question. They're a pretty helpful and knowledgeable bunch and can probably provide the answers you're looking for if you want to try doing it yourself. If it doesn't work you can always strip it and go to a pro. To join that list send an email to LISTPROC@micapeak.com with NO subject line and a message body consisting of: SUBSCRIBE YAM650 your name. Use your real name (or at least a name which could be a real name), not an internet name. HTH.

joshua: The regulator/rectifier unit I got from Mikes PMA has closer hole spacing than original. Are we supposed to mill the holes to fit?
Jun 7, 2017 19:25:58 GMT -5
joshua: My bad. I found the bracket they supplied to mount the rectifier/regulator... Uh oh. How is this meant to work? Which way is it meant to mount? Looks like I have to use some spacers or something. Good instructions would be nice.

craig8johnson: I'm checking the charging system. I'm afraid I might have fried the last battery. With the solid state regulator (after market) what should it be charging at. The book says, I think, 15 volts. I'm hitting 17 when revved. Is that too high?
Jul 11, 2017 18:06:19 GMT -5
gggGary: Yes 17 volts is too high, about 14 volts is max, sounds like you don't have the right regulator or it's wired wrong.

louisvan: trix13 - I had a problem with my 1975 SX650. When I got to highway speeds, the engine lost power. The problem was in the connectors. At a certain vibration and the wind pushing on the wiring loom, the connector lost continuity. A bad crimp to the wire.
