Hi folks, and happy new year to you all. Ok I want to paint my front an rear guards/fenders. Can I paint over the chrome or do I need to have it stripped off. If I have to strip it,how difficult is this and who would I go to to have it done. Of course I'm not local so I'm really talking about what type of place to go to rather than your personal favourite place. Thanks, Jack.

I recently had some chrome bits powdercoated and we glass beaded them for a surface prep. It works very well. I don't know if you get a fine gloss finish from spray painting with bead blasting as a prep? Best of luck, Cheers, 50gary

Glassbeading (using glass, not playground sand) is a good way to improve adheision on chromed parts. You will still get a nice glossy finish to your paint job. Its also a good idea to use an acid etch primer. The acid etch will literaly bite into the chrome, greatly improving your adhesion.
Stripping chrome can be done by any chrome shop. There are ways to strip the chrome at home (without grinding it off), but they produce byproducts that will give your neighbors unborn child birth defects and then give the whole family cancer. Not a risk that I would take.
If you decide to use an acid etch primer, be aware that it is deadly stuff. At a minimum, WEAR A NEW CHARCOAL RESPIRATOR . Many contain chromates and such. Please obtain, read and follow all of the information and directions for the products you will be using. Your family and friends just might thank you for it.
