Not sure where to go with this one... I've seen bikes with engines that were powder coated, my questions are: 1) how does this affect engine cooling? 2) how durable is this finish? 3) is there an advantage to powder coating (other than more colors to choose from) over anodyzing? Also: does either anodyzing or powder coating have any adverse effects on the metal of the case, jugs and heads?

I don't have an answer for you, but here is a pretty cool (although a little hard to navigate) website that is all about all finishes on metal. Look in the technical section for a Q and A section. www.finishing.com/index.htmlMental

Powdercoating the heads or jugs will most likely make the motor run hotter...how much hotter is the question...powdercoating the metal will not harm it...I powdercoat alot of my own parts and like it very much...

Ok, so powder coating will cause the engine to run hotter, something that isn't desired in an air cooled engine. What about anodyzing? Has anyone tried this?

I have had very good results with Plasticoat engine paint the coverage is great and after several coats it would be difficult to tell from power coating.

I had my engine powder coated a couple of years back, and no problems, yet. I tried to find out the same info, no one really knew the answer then, and I reckon they still don't. The overheating thing, maybe, but without a temp sensor on the engine and a gauge to give an accurate reading, thats an unkown. The engine is real easy to keep clean, even gas has no effect on it, an advantage if you like to keep it looking good. But, it is very important the engine be washed real good before it is assembled together. Hope this helps in your decision. Regs Kiwi.

A friend and I discussed this a couple years back, he suggested the anodyzing. Biggest drawback I can see there is the very limited color selection. I have a '77 engine I plan on doing some major mods to, think I'll find out the hard way if anodyzing works or not... lol. Thanks for the info....
