I'm talking frames here. Does a frame need to as smooth for powder coating as it would be if you were using paint? Does powder coating fill in minor surface pits, etc. Or maybe does powder coating show minor surface defects even worse than paint? I'm thinking of the area of the frame under the battery box. After years of not very good care the frame gets pitted from I guess leaking battery fluid or maybe just from the overflow tube from the battery. If you look close lots of older bikes have this problem. Looks like whatever it is actually eats the tubing. The current bike I have is pitted pretty bad in this area. I figure to blast the frame and sand most of the pits as smooth as I can but the less sanding the better right? (No thin tubes) Does powder coating flow into minor pitting and hide it or just make the pitting stand out? That would be the pits. Thanks - Jim

Judge - I can't tell you if powdercoating will fill in the pits or not, but I do know that it will protect the metal from the battery acid. Battery acid is sulphuric acid and it's what's causing the pits in your scoot's metal. It will eat right through steel, so I wouldn't think it's a great idea to sand the pits completely smooth - probably a better idea to fill them in - although I'm not sure that a plastic filler would take the powdercoat, or the 400 degree bakeing that it takes to set the stuff. Welding them in would probably be the safest bet, but then you have to grind the welds down smooth, as well. Your best bet is probably to talk to your local powdercoater to find out more - Hey - if you're lucky - the stuff might fill in the pits, and save you a whole bunch of work. I'm also planning on powdercoating my whole frame in the next year or two, since it gives such a great shine, and it's more durable than granite, so I'd love to hear what you learn.
Ride safe, eh.... CoolPoolNorm

;D Powder coating will cover 120 grit sand paper marks but nothing rougher than that ;D

PC'ing will fill a little, but not a lot. PC is between 1.5 and 2.0mils thick. there is hi-temp filler that some people use that will go up to 500 deg.
