Hello all. Recenlty I went to a vintage swap meat. I picked up a bunch of things and all for only $1(can) each. These items included clutch plate, clutch basket, fork springs, rectifier, voltage regulator, centre stand and a batery box. I was so happy even expecting half of it not to work . So i figure that i will sand down the centre stand, the battery box and then use a rattle can and try to do a nice finish. and repalce the existing one. The centre stand is basicly sanded down, but i can't reaah a few places with sand paper and my rotary tool. I have heard that spary on oven clean and throw it on the bbq for a bit and that will get rid of the paint in the hard to reach areas. Can anyone deny this or agree? Thanks joestyles

Dont have any advice on the oven cleaner but hey give it a try.I went to a local body shop and had my rear fender bead blasted (due to rust underneath)and only charged me 12 dollars. Was done in about 10 minutes and no elbow grease for me.Ready for paint, well worth the trip. How detailed do you want the parts to be?Center stand is pretty hidden.Never see battery box.A few imperfections in the paint wont be noticed.Daily driver? Then just clean it and shoot it.Just try your best to rid them of oil and rust first. If the paint is on there good ,no reason to remove it.

oven cleaner works ok for getting the engine clean. like i said ok. for paint use aircraft remover. you can get it in spray bomb or in a gel. wear gloves an cover your arms the stuff eats at you skin also. the only thing i've seen where i have to use more than one good coat of that is powder coating an it will eat that away to with enough coats. you can get it from most auto paint supply houses an i've even seen it at walmart. it cost alot (about $9 a spray can) but it goes a long way. i watched a guy strip a whole car with 3 cans. hope that helps ya

Thanks I will look for some fo that aircraft remover at the store for future projects forsure. I finally gave in and called around for a blasting place, that is after fighting to get into the nicks and crannies of the parts with sand paper, rotary tool and wire brush with little sucess. I found a place that does bead blasting. It is going to cost around 20 dollars to get the centre stand and the batery box done. Thanks again for your help joe styles

Most auto parts stores carry Permatex Gasket & Paint Stripper. It works very well. Spray it on and let it work a few minutes, then rinse off. Re-apply as necessary or scrape it off with a wire brush(carefully, it contains acid). About $2.50 per can.

find a local stripping shop if you have a bunch of parts to clean. Ask around at body shops, find out where they get their media blasting done. I got my tank blasted for $40, and they'd probably have done the center stand for around $10, but I was prepping it for a pretty expensive paint job (and I got rid of the center stand too). I still had to do some pretty extensive sanding after that, but most of the work was done. for a rattle can job maybe the other stuff would work, just be aware that surface rust will reappear with time if it isn't taken care of. But if you're rattle canning it then it might be the look you're going for.

rather than rattle can black I suggest you brush on rustoleum high gloss black enamel. I used that on my battery box. It fills in the little rust pits and gives a smooth factory enameled look .
