Has anyone had any experiance or any luck with painting an engine block.I am thinking about it and then polishing the ends of the fins.Is there a special paint to use and do I need to prime it first? This is on a special project not anything that I am ruinining, would never do that to a great old bike like these. thanks

I bead blasted the cylinder first to make a good clean surface and then Spray canned it. I used Dupli-color low gloss black, number 1638. It's an engine enamel with ceramic and good for 500' F. It worked quite well and is easy to do if your engine is already apart. I have a friend that has a powder coating business and he does many air-cooled bike engines. I just didn't have the extra money to spend on the powder coating. Cheers, 50gary

You might wanna consider sand blasting the cases to open the aluminum pours up for the paint to adhere, then bake the cases in the sun covered with a black tarp.Epoxy paints are extremly durable Jack

;D Alumiium is realy too soft for sand blasting. Use glass beading instead. THis gives a better finish and no fall out afterwards so you don't have to worry about the sand falling out of the aluminuum when you paint it too ;D

I just had my motor bead blasted last week. It looks better now than when it came out of the factory. Now, all I have to do is polish the outer cases, valve covers and cam timing cover. Once you see the finish you may decide against the painting process. Aluminum is one of the hardest metals to paint unless it is absolutely spotless.

I have an '83. I bought the bike new and it had a black engine and carbs. The cases are still black. The head, jugs, and carbs show little to no black now. I planned to repaint the engine when I pull it for tranny work.
Will I just make it look worse? What kind of paint did the factory use?
