I'm getting ready to paint a metal tank and a fiberglass fender. Right now, the tank is primed and ready to go with a red primer. Thinking about doing it in yellow...white, a light color. Should I shoot this thing with like a gray or white primer if going with a light color or won't it affect outcome of top coat and clear?
Another question(s), when painting fiberglass, does it matter what type of primer you use? I've heard that one should stay away from self-etching primer for fiberglass. Any flexing agents or special addtives needed in the paint when mixing in vs. painting for metal tanks?

Hi vfrf2 that red primer is red oxide primer or a lacquer base primer you don't want to use that on the tank because it will lift around the filler hole with in 6 months(because of gas fumes). I fix 4-6 of them a year because of that junk(other body shops use it) . You want to use a urethane or polyurethane primer or sealer any good body shop has it on hand & use the same on the fiberglass. Well worht the extra money. Hope this helps.

;D YEP ;D One thing that you can do is us 2 or 3 differnt colours of primer to make the colour look like it's been sprayed different shades... with candy apples and such. Solid colours usualy look a bit different however there is more of a dramtic effect with candies 8-)
If you were to use a Gold under coat and spray Green over it, possibly a metalic lets say, The first coat will clearly show the colour change to the Green over coating. COOL :o 8-) If you spray another coat over top of it if gets darker.
Same thing if you used white and silver in flames .... it comes out a slightly different colour which is genrated by the bases :o 8-) ;D ;) :) ;D
Damn I love painting.............................
