I'm getting ready to prep my tank and new seatpan for paint, so I'm wondering what the best way to take the paint off the tank is: paint remover? wire wheel? grinder? anyone know anything that does the job well without thinning the metal, besides media blasting? I'm looking for something I can do on my own.
Thanks

I'd use paint stripper. Then clean it with a scotchbrite pad. Use a tack cloth before primering.
Are you sure that you need to remove the original paint? You might just want to wet sand with 400 grit paper and paint over the original basecoat.

well, I've made a new manx-ish seat pan that follows the lines of te tank, which is black (and actually recently painted), but I want them to match as closely as posible.
Also, whoever painted the tank filled the holes where the "YAMAHA" used to be on the sides of the tank, which is killer, 'cause I'm not a fan of block letters on tanks, but there's a very slight raise where it was filled and I was thinking of smoothing it out, and I hate the thought of using any kind of body filler over paint, I'd rather go right to the metal.
All in all, I kinda just want to strip it so I know exactly what condition everything's in.
