I'm needing to blast the old powdercoat off of the mag wheels that I am going to be using on my xs. At first I thought just regular sandblasting but I am wanting to polish the outer lip of each rim after powder coat. Would anyone have an idea as to what kind I should try and use to blast off the old powder but keep it half way smooth for polishing?

Aluminim Oxide would do the trick I believe. Nice satin finish after blasting. Cheers, 50gary

I use Al Oxide to prepare aluminum parts that are in bad shape with alot of oxididation for polishing, but be careful. You can "burn" the part if the pressure is too high or nozzle too close. This will make it difficult to get a good shine. The part will appear cloudly in spots.

If you want to keep the polished lip.. mask it off then blast.. polishing out blasted aluminum is a pain in the a$$.. trust me, i wasted lots of time on this. You can blast the powder coat off.. but it will take one hefty rig... if the PC job was done right.. it will be hell to get off. I have my own powder coating business.. and i chemical strip anything with powder on it.. its much easier.. large stuff with powder on it goes to the sand blaster with the big rig, he runs at 10,000psi.

Well nobody around here has the correct stuff to blast it with. So I sanded down the entire wheel (basically scuffed the powder coat) and painted it gloss black. Doesn't look too bad so I can live with it I guess....
Sucks when you want to try something but nobody close to get it accomplished.

Eastwood sells some great looking "cast aluminum" paint in the rattle can that works real well in covering up the black sections on the XS cast wheels...Looks fresh and new years later too..You can then polish the ridges of the cast spokes and the bead/shoulders to a mirror finish and that makes a great contrast to the "cast look" of the rest of the wheel..
I have alos used a commercial chemical paint stripper on the black PC and it worked OK...It tool as while and several sessions, but it worked..
