Heres a gauge assembly that I'm making for my 650. I like the tach and speedo contained in 1 housing, but Im not sure of the orientation of the needles. I want something different and I like the 1 gauge cluster for the 2 gauges. The 3 pics with the old gauge faces on them are just for reference as to the 3 possibilitys that I have been toying with. A new gauge face will be made with the numbers in the proper orientation. The other 2 pics show the new housing as of now. It will get an aluminum cover to hold the glass and the idiot lights will be put back into the new gauge face. I like the speedo pointing down and the tach pointing up. Any other opinions? An interesting task you've set yourself !
Observing other dials / gauges on other bikes, cars, etc it seems common to have the gauges oriented so that "normal" status has the needles pointing in the same orientation with the same directional movement. For this application that means a good orientation would be your option which shows the needles at the 5 o'clock position. That way, when you are cruising, both needles will point to about 8 o'clock and rise the same direction. It should be easier to read at a glance so you can keep you eyes on the road for longer !
At the moment I am converting my tacho to an electronic type. I have a suitable stainless bucket but no means to fit the glass as yet. What ideas have you had to fit yours? I noticed you have a flange around the edge, so will you crimp a retaining ring over as factory fitted gauges do, or do you have a different idea?

I've made a 2 peice aluminum lens holder for the gauges. 1 peice mounts inside the bucket and the other peice will bolt to it with the glass sandwiched between. The 3 gauge faces shown are in the modified stock buckets and the bucket I made doesnt have the lip shown in the 3 pics. The assembly will have the idiot lights in it and will also have the odo reset. I'm still not sure what orientation I will use. With the 2 needles at 8 oclcok, the # on the gauges would interfere with each other. I will probably go with the 1st or 3rd gauge face that is pictured. Or maybe not? It has been on the back burner as I have other work that needs to be done.
