My '80 is running well, but the headlight is dim. High and low beams work though. I don't know if this is related, but occasionally, the electric start seems too weak to turn the motor to crank, so I have to kick it. I need the headlight for night riding so am more concerned with that right now than the starter. Thanks, Mark

Make sure battery is good. Bake sure all wire connections to headlight, including the fuse are clean. Then switch to halogen light. It will be better.

Do the lights get brighter as you rev the engine off idle? If the charging system is working you should notice them get brighter as you go above 1,700-1,800 rpm. If they stay dim then it's not charging and you should park it until you can get it fixed. As Growl suggested, check all of your fuses for a good connection and clean the fuse clips carefully. If it doesn't improve then troubleshoot your charging system to find the cause.

Check generator brushes for length and fit a relay into the light circuit so you loose less voltage through the 20+yr old switches, etc. The headlight switch was marginal when new, putting extra current through it is going to make it more likely to fail PJ

I'm having a similar problem, but only on the low beam. I've determined that my low beam hot wire (the green one) is grounding out somewhere. The wire is good back to the RLU, and that's where I'm stuck so far.
