1980 xs650sg.... Was missing the headlight. Bought a replacement headlight, halogen bulb, and electrical socket for $48 from Allyn Air Co. and mounted on aftermarket ears. After soldering all wire leads and taping, headlight is not as bright as a lit cigarette. When switching from low beam to high beam, or visa versa, takes about 5 seconds to re-ignite. What is the deal? I get so frazzled on this stuff I can't figure out what to do next. Bike has a new battery and doesn't seem to have a charging system problem. Any pointers, trouble shooting tips, or instructions would be greatly appreciated. Bike is SOOOOO close to being back on the road. Thanks Again.

Sounds like you have the wrong wires going to the head light. If you have a manual check the head light wires. Don't quote me but I remember it was a green-yellow -black wire for the head lamp. They usually have other wires in the head light bezel that are not used, you may have taped into one of those. If you don't have a manual see try this like for a wire diagram, it may be in here somewhere. www.rocketcar.net/bike/assembly20040819.htmlwww.cyclepsycho.com/yamachopper/wires/wires.htmlThere is also a factory Yamaha web site you can look up the diagram from, I don't have it maybe someone else can link it.

I figured the problem out. Reserve lighting unit. Soldered a bridge across the male ends, L/Y to L/B, of the plug after disposing of the RLU. After that, light worked fine. Reassembled light, only to discover a short when wiggling the main loom. The back of the headlight socket was grounding against something, so I taped the back of the socket and viola! Now onto carbs...LOL!
