Hi all, not exactly sure where to post this, so if a mod wants to move it feel free.
If you're familiar at all with LED clusters as light bulb replacement you know they're great because they take some of the burden off of your already heavily taxed charging system. The downside is they have a narrow field of view since their light is directional. This makes the use of the reflector in your bike's light housings more or less useless.
Enter, "The Matrix" style LED clusters with axially arranged LEDs in addition to the standard straight back LEDs. The theory is they're every bit as bright as the incandescant bulbs, take less power, and are observable from just as wide a viewing area as an incandescant.
Check here for details: autolumination.com/matrix.htm
Well, I bought one, $14 shipped, and it's less than I was hoping it would be.
The light is decidedly "muddier" and the difference between running light on and brake light on is minimal.
It's not bad enough to make me put the incandescant bulb back in, but I can't recommend it either. I'm going to write the company and ask to x-change it for a "super-white" cluster. This one has red LEDs which the company that sold it to me was very insistant be used with the red tail light lens.
I'd trade a little bit of blue tint to my tail light if it meant getting it back to incandescant bulb brightness.
Will update this again if I get to do that exchange, but if you're thinking of buying one of these, you may want to hold off.
Best,
Pol
EDIT: I already got word back from the seller, he'll exchange it as long as I include an extra $1 for shipping. That's more than fair, so I'll do that and report back what happens.
