Ok here's one for the stumper.
1978 XS650SE, stock. The turn signals work, but in a odd way. While riding, if I hit the right signal, nothing happens. If I hit the left, it works the left lights. Then if I hit the right signal, the right works. After that the right will continue to work by itself (meaning I hit right only, instead of left then right) but only for a short while, I haven't timed it yet. At that point right stops, until I hit left again and then go back to right.
Thoughts? Is it the switch or something deeper in the system?

My first thought is of grunge, crud and corruption on the contacts of the handlebar switch.
Second thought is an iffy ground connection.
Third thought is a bad connector at the flasher unit.
Fourth thought is.....oh hell, that's enough. My head hurts.

Does your bike still have the self cancelling unit hooked up? If so the problem may be dirty switch contacts or possibly a bad cancelling unit. The handle bar switch has two sets of contacts for each side. The second set is there to signal the cancelling unit to start counting. The cancelling unit will shut the signal off after the bike has rolled 400 meters or thirty seconds have passed whichever comes first (while rolling). Clean up every contact and connector including the bulbs and sockets before you try a new cancelling unit. Curly Curly

Dirty contacts I could definitely see. I know the cancelling unit is hooked up and working because my signals have gone off after a time. I'll have to see about pulling the contacts and cleaning everything. Where's the cancelling unit located at, so I can clean around that as well?

Had a similar problem. I sprayed contact cleaner directly into the switch and worked it back and forth. Took two tries but its fixed.

I'm pretty sure it's up under the tank, near the coils. It's a long square, rubber encased unit. The only thing you can check/clean on it is it's multi pin plug and the one on the harness.
