that i ordered from mikes seems not to fit the socket holder and immediately the brake indicator comes on when the ignition switch is turned on . Works ok with a standard tail light bulb so what could i be overlooking just trying to install it ? another question is where is the turn signal flasher on a 1978 standard ?

I also had trouble making mine fit. It's because with the LED unit, the "bulb" (the plastic housing that holds the lights) starts to get wider much sooner than the glass housing of the 1156 bulb does. This causes the plastic housing of the LED light to touch the socket and bottom out before the contacts are fully seated inside the socket. PITA to be sure. I was able to grind / file the base of the LED's plastic bulb housing to provide more clearance, but I'm looking for alternative LED bulbs with a better profile to avoid this. --- As far as the flasher... on my '78 special it is underneath the gas tank, near the frame (have to unbolt the gas tank at the seat and lift up to get there) -marshall

I got a standard 4 inch Grote LED (26 of them) tailight...and a standard 4 inch PCV end cap. Had to trim a small 1/16th lip off the tailight..20 seconds on the belt sander....drilled six holes...two for the mount..one for the wires...one on each side for the small red reflectors...one in the botton for any condensation build up...a little plastic black paint..a little super glue..the stock Yamaha male elec wires popped right in place (I super glued them it also)....Less then $30 and a afternoon...Mike, MN

Hi Mike,
Where did you get the Grote LED taillight? And for that matter, what is a Grote taillight for?

...Grote..part number G4002.....it's a outfit that provides various lights...tail lights..side markers...of various shapes and sizes...they also have a oval unit that I think would be able to adapt to the Special rectangle (under the grab bar) tail lights. I found this at a local parts place....ck with your local dealers and possibly a boat tralier outfit. Mike, MN

I bought the LED 1157 bulb from mikes. The contacts are the reverse from an 1157 bulb... you'll have to swap the blue and (yellow I think?) wire bullet connectors in the taillight assembly to make it work. Weird manufacturing screwup, I guess.. but thats how I got mine to work..

Since we're on the subject, has anyone else had problems with the circuit board on LED lamps vibrating apart? I hate to spend the extra money if I'm not getting much of a life increase. I've gone through 2 so far, one of Mike's with the ring of sideways LEDs, and a reg. 1157 from Autozone. I'm back to keeping a cheap-o pack of 1157s in my toolbag.

I picked up a pair of LED 1157 replacements for my 82 SJ from superbrightleds.com. They have elements aimed back and a ring aimed sideways. They fill the lens with light, seem to be bright enough in broad daylight, and although I've only had them for about 350 miles, haven't failed yet.

It was good for the first 600 miles or so of my trip. Then my buddy pulled me over (in the rain) to tell me he kept almost rear-ending me. Only the ring was still lighting, and that went soon after. When I pulled into some hick gas station to get some incandescents, the LED one was filled with water & gunk and the circuit boards were loose. I will admit this was before I rubber-mounted my tail-light.

I just installed a pair of these in my stock 82 SJ taillight.. www.bluhmenterprises.com/products/moto-brite-lites.php?pn_category_id=84I'm using the 1157 RED emitting, [BL-1157360R] as the the red lens of the tail light does not filter the red spectrum of light being produced by the red producing LEDs themselves.. I have tried many sets of various LEDs and was always disappointed with the brightness....However, with that said...I was trying to use the "white light" emitters and bought cheap bulbs... This 360 array of red emitters is BRIGHT and the brake light is really really noticable when the brakes are used.. I can't say how well they hold up..The info provided claims the LED arrays are purpose built. Hopefully that will make a difference. John

Actually, it does fit. But the one they sent me (an 1157) seems to be internally shorted. It doesn't have dual brightness.
