I have rode many bikes over the years, Honda's, Harley's, Kawi's etc. The 2 that I find most appealing are the XS 650's and the HD Evo sporty's. They have a lot in common. Easy to work on, fun to ride, and can be a platform for what ever kind of ride you want, Cruiser, Chopper, Tracker, Street fighter. Just basic twin fun.Heard that! I have four XSes (only one running at the moment) and an Evo Sporty. I'm fond of them both, with the edge going toward the XS. When it comes to getting disrespected by HD guys, Sporty riders are used to it. They don't get any respect from the Big Twin crowd. We don't care, though. We like riding the fast Harley's, not the fat ones.
What's cool about the XS though is what Grepper mentions. Don't matter too much where you go if there's a bunch of other bikers around -- at least one of 'em's gonna come up to you and talk about the XS he used to own or ride -- at length. It happened to me again just this past Thursday night. I was hanging out at an ice house with some friends (ice houses are a local Houston phenomenon, check out what Wikipedia has to say about 'em). There was a good turn out of scoots that night -- all kinds. A guy walks up to me after finding out who was riding the XS, introduces himself, and then proceeds to tell me how he rode from Michigan to Florida (and back) and to Texas -- and who knows where else -- on his XS back in the 80s. He's riding a Magna now, but that soft spot was still there.
True to the XS code, I told him to keep his eyes open, and another one might just fall in his lap. Seems like that's the way it's worked for me.
Best,
Michael
