A condenser is not required for the system and should not be installed. My list of coils is limited to those I have actually installed on my bikes, and they are:
1. The stock '80 to '83 dual output coil on my '81/H 2. The custom chrome #17131 HD coil on my '78. 3. Mikes XS #17-6803 that I installed and ran on my '81/H as well.
Other dual output coils with a 2 to 3 Ohm primary resistance should be fine as well.

OK, mounted my new TCI coil from Mike's on oposite side of coil mount like they reccomend and now my Omar glass tank won't fit. Don't really want to grind on the coil mount or frame to make it fit in the original spot since I just painted the frame.
So I think I will go with the coil you are using Pete. The #17131 from Custom chrome. Can you give me some basic measurements off of yours or a pic of it mounted on your bike?
The good news is that I can use the TCI coil on my 77 with stock tank when I switch it over to the Universal Ignition.

fitz Here is the "Custom Chrome" #17131 mounted on my '78 standard.  I just squeezed it into the space where the frame riser meets the cross bar. I did have to file one corner of the coil a bit because it is a tight fit. Secured it with a rubber lined clamp. Just make sure there is sufficient clearance between the coil high tension wires (shown) and the gas tank. Center the coil under the frame and use an inspection mirror to check the clearance with the tank installed The coil is used on various HD models like the Sportster and you can generally get a generic version at your local HD dealer for about $45. You do not have to get the "Custom Chrome" version, which may be more expensive. DO NOT get the #17130 version. It is identical in appearance but is for points systems. Used on: Shovelheads '80 to '84 Sportsters '80 to '82 with V-Fire III ignition. The OEM part number is 31609-80. These coils are very dependable in a 90 degree dwell angle (50% duty cycle) dual output wasted spark application, such as this one. I also used a set of plug wires for a 1967 Camaro at Advance Auto: Just about any Chevy V8 pre HEI will do: Accel Spark Plug Wire Set: 7mm SuperStock; Graphite; Pre-HEI; Universal Fit; Yellow From Advance Auto. www.partsamerica.com/Part Number: 3011 $13.99 from Advance auto. also available in blue for $33.99 (3011B) Remember...this is for 8 (count em) wires!   These are 7 mm wires. This is for a 1967 Camaro. Cut the wires to fit. Remove the "distributor" crimped end (see photo above). Then, carefully strip the insulation off, leaving about a 1/2 inch of inner conductor. Fold the inner conductor back on the outside of the wire and crimp the distributor end back on. Don't forget to put the rubber boot on first. The inner conductor is not actually a wire, it's some other material impregnated with graphite, so treat it gently.

Well looks like back to plan (A). The only way I could use that coil is if I mounted it where the original horn was. I'm going to modify the coil mount and make Mike's TCI coil work. The pic and the plug wire tip helped out a bunch.

Well, I guess I don't understand your comment. The space where I mounted the coil is open. The horn is below that space. Other than filing a bit off of the lower left corner of the coil, it fits right in there. Take another look.

Pete,
No problem with fitting the coil, but the plug wires coming out of coil will not clear the tank. Inside of tank is only 1/2" wider than the frame tube. So I only have a 1/4" to work with. I need to route plug wires into area below steering head then loop them back.

Ok, I get it now. Just one more possibility. Use right angle boots on the coil and rotate the coil slightly so the coil towers are angled at about 45 deg downward.

Problem solved,
Did a little grinding on stock coil mount and notched the frame in two spots so the plug wires have some wiggle room. Dyna coil might have worked, but don't think there was any way I could have used the Harley coil. Thanks for the help guys.
I hope you sell everyone of those Pete. Great product. I'm about ready for my second one.

A quick question for you...Please jog my memory...If I am installing this setup on an '80 and up will I have to pull the cam to install the cam bushings? Or were you able to do it with the cam still in the head? This will work with stock '80 and up coils also?

eric123 You can install the cam bushings without pulling the cam. They are a "gentle" press fit in both ends of the cam. Suggest that you first clean out the holes where they go which may have dirt, rust etc. from not being used. Yes, the system will work with stock coils in the '80 to '83 models. I installed the system in my '81/H model using the stock coil, and in fact that is a picture of the installation in the first two posts.  Here are the bushings installed.  Here is the complete system installed in my '81/H

Hello pamcopete, I am ordering the coils to go with the two ignition systems I am ordering, and wanted to ask about plug wires and caps. Right now I have fairly new non-resistor stock setups, do I need anything special there, or will stock handle the job? Thanks! Steve in Maine

Well, I usually reccomend 5K of resistance per plug, which can be achieved in one of three ways:
1. Non resistor wire, non resistor plugs (NGK BP7ES) with a 5K cap. 2. Non resistor wire, resistor plugs (NGK BPR7ES, 5K) 3. Resistor wire (Like from a 1967 Camaro), non resistor plugs.
With what you already have, I would just switch to the NGK BPR7ES. The purpose of the resistance is to supress EMF (radio interferance) and limit the secondary current in the coil, which, in my opinion, will help the coil live longer.
