Hello! Just want to clarify a few things before I install my Pamco ignition system. The red/white wire from the harness, and the red wire from the Pamco wiring should meet up at the + terminal on my mikesxs #17-6803 coil, correct? I believe so, just not real good with wiring am I. Also, judging by the mounting points on my '80 frame, it looks like the coil should be grounded at the mounting holes. Should I make sure my coil is grounded at the mounting holes when doing the modified install on my 77? Thanks again Pete for all your work and time with this! Steve in Maine

You are right about the red/white wire.
It is not really necessary for the coil frame to be grounded. The secondary of the coil (the winding that fires the plugs) is floating. It does not need a ground reference, but, ordinarily, it would be grounded by the mounting bracket hardware. The green wire from the Pamco system goes to the other terminal on the coil, marked "-". That just leaves the black wire from the Pamco unit, which must be firmly grounded to the frame, usually the same bolt that the black wires from the wiring harness are grounded to.

I finally got to finish installing my Pamco Ignition system on my 77, and it works great! The hardest part was finding a home for the new dual output coil. I can't wait to put this system on my '80, because I know it will swap right in no problem. One other thing before I show you pictures...I was a little concerned when folks had been talking about one side of the coil being "erratic" I am no longer concerned! The timing does move a tiny bit on one side, but it's certainly within reason. I actually didn't even have to adjust the timing, got it perfect when I installed it! Thanks again Pete!! Ok, some pictures! Here is the Pamco ignition system installed, that took all of 7.2 minutes. Here's the general coil area...not much room, guess I'll get out the cutter and welder ;D Here are some new mounts for the coil, and the mounts for the other stuff moved to the side. I copied all these ideas from my '80 frame standing in the corner. I cut up the old coil mounts to make these. Here's the coil in place (MikesXS part# 17-6803) I forgot to take a picture with everything else in there, but it all fit nicely!

pamcopete, gooday, I think I need one of those, but how would I set the timing? I've always used the static method, is a timing light required? 'rider.

slow rider Well, as stevesempti discovered, if you install the plate with the upper hold down screw right in the middle of the adjustment groove, you will be as close as you could get with static timing. You could also substitute a 12 volt bulb for the coil, smoothly rotate the crankshaft with the plugs removed, the light should go out when the timing mark is between the "F" marks, just like points. Or, just tell me when you order it and I will scrib a timing mark on the plate for you!

Slowrider, a timing light is a great tool to have, and you can get one from harborfreight.com right now for $18 including shipping (the website says $20, but if you really want to save the two bucks, pm me and I'll tell you how) plus there is always something else you want from Harbor Freight, at least, that's how it is with me

I just had a look at their site, you guys are so lucky in the U.S , things are so inexpensive compared to Aus. including xs's. I dont think they mail to Australia, so I had a look on ebay and found a couple under $20, but who knows what the end price will be. Theres a 'snap on' one there for $399.00! I've got by for 30 years without one, I think I'll survive.I will bid on one under $20 though.

Mounting MikesXS dual output coil #17-6803...no welding required! Go to Home Depot and buy 2 Ground Clamps (1/2 - 3/4 - 1") #051411160104 @ $1.46 ea. Substitute bolts for the mounting screws and attach to the coil. Clamp the coil to the cross bar where the stock coils used to be. Here it is on my '78/E. Simple, rugged (galvanized iron clamps) Ride. Enjoy. Life is simple (sometimes!)

Good one Pete! :^) Makes me want to run out and get a new coil so I can try it out! Very, very clever mounting. Thanks, Tom Graham

Perfect! ... I'll go that route ... maybe wrap a piece of 15 or 20 thou brass shim under each clamp to protect the powder on the frame.

New to this forum-the info is great.I see you're looking for 5K resistance per plug-Iridium plug BPR7EIX-anyone know if this gives 5K resistance cause I could use the 2 horsepower MikesXS sayes I'll get!
