I have been trying to find beads for my new blasting cabinet locally. Nobody seems to have them. I did find one place in Houston, TX but I'd have to buy a whole pallet and have it shipped here. I've looked at the local tool stores, welding supply, etc. Who handles blasting media in reasonable quantities for guys like us? I will probably buy one or two 50lb bags.

auto parts & bearing up on ouachita has a few extra bags. they bead blast in their machine shop and usually stock some extra media for sale over the counter. it comes in different grits so you'll need to go down there and talk to them. the guy i talked to (james) said they were getting ready to reorder in case you need a different grit than what they have on hand.

I called Auto Parts & Bearings and whoever answered the phone said they'd never had any. Also checked with Tool Source, AR Welding Supply, C.J. Horner. I found some beads yesterday at the classic car place on Rock Creek Road. The guy there was very nice to me. They have a real first class operation out there.

that's wierd, i talked to james on thursday and he said they had a couple of 50# bags. of course not everybody up there knows whats going on. you need to talk to one of the old guys thats been there forever. thats the oldest parts place in town and they've got some pretty neat stuff gathering dust in the warehouse. i'm familiar with those old boys on rock creek, can't think of his name right off hand though.

In my area of Virginia the local rental store has a supply of blasting material. When they rent the blaster they sell the blasting material. You might have some luck there. Hope this helps!

www.mscdirect.comThere should be one in Houston, or they can ship it too you. They have all types of media, walnut shells are really good for cleaning motorcycle parts too. If you are blasting steel look into some of the aluminum oxide media, it lasts a lot longer than sand and makes a lot less dust. Good luck, Doug

I wanted to have sand blasting capability on a budget. Bought the, gun only, set-up from harbor tools and built a large booth from a cardboard box. For blasting material I use Playsand from Home Depot, around $3.00 a bag. I do run the material through a screen prior to pull out the larger size media. Use a clean shop vac to pick up and reuse media. The sand does break down quickly and is only good for three or four runs. Waste isn't a concern at the price.

If using silica sand (playground sand) make SURE you use a very good respirator. Silica dust mixes with lung mucus easily to form silica concrete in your lungs and causes Silicosis. Silicosis sucks!
Blast safe!
