Happy Holidays Everyone, Somewhere I downloaded (and lost) plans to build a bench top engine stand. Does anyone have measurements and a photo available? I would have to drag that *##*-in heavy engine to work to weld one up without some decent specifications. Thanks

Hello xs650wis, I have posted a picture of my Bench Top Engine Stand on: photobucket.com/albums/v463/GoranXS650/Go To: Tools and Workshop The wide design makes the stand stable and provides good holds for two people when lifting and moving. Best Regards Göran Persson New Zealand

well I made this cost was 97 cents. Its two bars off a carpet sample display rack and the stock engine mounts. yup Im a tightwad, but it works good and can be slide around.

Thanks for the responses. I will probably go with the angle iron design. It looks pretty simple with easy welds. I have to admitt the longer or wider stands would be great for lugging those 150lbs engines around.

My link didn't work ........... so what's new. I'm looking for an eight year old to show me how to work this damned computer. Anyway this is the little rascal. It's on US Ebay for $45 and looks the business to me. Tony

I wasn't a fan of this stand.... seemes to top heavy.....I tripped down to the local hardware store.... popped $8 for some 1 inch sq stock.... Had the motor sitting on the bench...eye-balled the sq tubing...hack saw....a basic square base...with a portion sticking up to the front engine mounting hole...drilled a few holes...one for the lower engine bolt and one for the front engine bolt...had it welded...cheap....it ani't pretty...but it works.. I built the one in 5twins reply, last week. Took one evening and about $7 worth of 1 inch angle iron from Home Depot. Bolted up to the motor just fine and was pretty stable. I use a chain fall, and a heavy nylon strap around the cylinders to get it out of the frame and onto a 4 wheel dolly. Saves a lot of back damage.

For anyone building that stand, I recommend you add 1" to the length of the uprights. Even doing that, my starter motor barely cleared it ..... And to get the engine out, I whipped up these "handles". They allowed me and my brother to lift the motor like a stretcher and wiggle it out of the frame .....

I found the prefect tool to remove the engine.....a 22 year old kid.... When it came time to install it... I cheated.....laid the engine on a towel....on it's side..then worked the frame over it....Bolt the center stand first....then once the engine is in....stand it up..triple trees..forks..wheel and then put it on the center stand.. Update time fellas. My bench top stand has gone mobile. At the end of a big job last fall, the dumpsters were being loaded up. Well, out rolls this great A/V stand that the carpenters were using to hold their blueprints. When I saw that thing, all I could think of was how good my 650 engine stand would fit on top - a couple small bolts w/wingnuts to hold it down, an angle iron out-rigger to hang the cam chain from ..... the rest, as they say, is history. Just got done tearin' down my buddy's motor today and the "Rollin' Stand" works swell .....

Hi all, Im trying to read these plans from www.650motorcycles.com/XSstand.htmland just want to make sure i understand it correctly. The middle support is 2 1/4 total height with the center of the whole at 1 7/8. So the top is 3/8 from the center of the hole leaving 1/8" from the top of the hole to the top of the support? the front support ( i cant really read it ) looks like 4 5/8 total height ( but that cant be right, because that would make it 1/8 " from the top of the support to the center of the whole?) Is that a 4 7/8 for the total length of the front support? then again, i havent done math in 20 years so i could be totally off here. Thanks, David

Yes, that longer support (actually the rear) should read 4 7/8" overall height in those plans but as I mentioned a few posts up, if you want the engine to fit in the stand with the starter motor still attached (as most of us do), make both uprights 1" longer. If you look closely at the 2nd pic in your link, you'll see that using the plan dimensions requires a "V" notch be cut in the one base angle for starter clearance. Make the uprights 1" longer and you won't need to do that.
More tips - the holes only need to be 7/16" (but 1/2" will work of course). Bolts to attach the stand to the motor can be made up from lengths of 3/8" all-thread. That will free up your motor mount bolts for cleaning, painting, etc.
