My bike (79 special) is popping back through the left side carb, I am thinking valve adjustment is needed or mabe burnt valve, Has anyone experienced this, & does it sound like Im on the right track? I read through several threads but there are alot of'em & I start reading about something else & get lost in 650 information! One of my co-workers suggested lapping the valves, is this something to consider? The bike runs good but, about every 5 or 10 secs it will pop out of the left carb, once it kiled the bike, usually it just pops & keeps running.

I got the same issue with my 650.

my wild guess is that the spit back is caused by a lean condtion on that side, probably a float set to high (fuel level in the bowl too low).

It could also be timing related if you have a points model. Or plug wire/cap related on any model (bad wire, cap, or connections).

Agreed, point's work great when properly maintained, but when a bit dirty or burnt they can be very troublesome. Often ignition and fueling symptoms are the same, so deciding if a symptom is ignition or fueling is half the problem. Leo

Points wear on the rubbing heel of the points assembly, this decreases the gap and retards the timing. One thing I've found with an XS is that a decreased gap led to backfire when kick starting. The left side blew the carb out of the manifold. When first sorting out my junk XS I found the kill switch was completely corroded out and this led to backfire and carbs blowing off.
Does your XS pop when you back off the throttle? One BIG problem with all resurected old bikes is a tiny bit of dirt finding its way to the idle jet. A simple squirt of carb cleaner inside the mixture screww hole will blow the dirt back to the float bowl. If this is your problem it is very quick and easy to test. Drain the float bowl through a paper towel so you can see and dirt you flushed into the float bowl.

Hi, I had the same problem. The left intake valve shaft is slightly bent. Got a new valve, lapped all, put it back together and it runs like new. Hope this helps. Fergie
