stage 1 of my build is done. this is my first bike ever, flame away. it started right up, everything works. got it in miserable shape, covered in white paint overspray, grease and dog hair. now, flapper wheeld and clear coated tank, aluminum electrics box following the frame lines, superbike type bars, bunch of little homemade junk.

Nice and spare looking. Where's the seat from?
(Looks like about as miserable riding there as here would be.)

the seat is made by me. inspired by the brat bikes from japan. it weighs probably 1lb. ;D plastic pan, vinyl cover. that was a big goal of mine, to cut as much weight from the bike as possible. once I get an exhaust built, I can start cutting some other stuff off. I'll have better pics up probably next week. ;D I want to get an aluminum XT500 tank or equivelant and polish it up, it will look saweet and cut some more weight. the only downside with that will be the range.

Nice! I'd like to see some close ups of the 'electrics box' you did since I'll soon be hacking into mine. It's pretty amazing how much wiring these 'simple' bikes need, huh?

wes xs, I took some great pics of the electrics crap, but they are still in my camera which has like 15 pics left on the roll. I chose not to strip down the harness any. I want to keep a tach and speedo for a while here while I get better at riding. jeepurz, what is the oil frame stuff mean? I was not banking on the stock mounts to fit, they would be custom. the thing I am worried about though is finding a tank with a big enough tunnel to clear the XS frame. I was looking at this sick Hodaka tank in the junk yard, but the tunnel was like an inch wide.

true. I was just going by the pics I saw on ebay for xt500, they seemed to have the biggest tunnels and I guess this is why. thanks for the info.

damn thats a good idea. its so hard to ride and hold a beer at the same time! the tanks I was looking at are the ones with dents n stuff for a little cheaper. Im pretty pissed about missing out on some aluminum dirtbike tank that was completely straigh but some idiot spraypainted their name on it so it went for like $35 with petcock and cap. I got outbid by a few cents!!!

FWIW the XS and SR tanks are 'backwards' from each other on their mounts... one has the rubber things on the frame and seats for them on the tank, the other is the other way around.

hmm good to know, thanks. the petcocks on the xs650 tank are really terrible, I am probably going to have to shell out for the Al tank soon enough because I am sure as hell not throwing any money at the POS xs tank. a lot of the tanks I have seen like the DR400 have low slung mounts where I could just drill a hole through the frame and run a long bolt for the front mount, then rig up something else for the rear. also the stock rear tank mount is kinda fighting with my seat so hopefully it will all work out. plus the wiring harness is giving me crap. time to hack that up too. it never ends does it! I really wish I coulda left well enough alone and just got a dual sport to ride around. ;D
