Well, after about a year I finished my 650 chopper. It started out as a rebuild of a stock XS650 my son inherited for nothing. It set out in the woods for ten years untouched. Our neighbor gave it to my son to rebuild, which we did after two years and a lot of money to rebuild it to original condition. On its maiden voyage the carb back fired and the bike burned up. Not willing to give up I decided to keep the engine and frame and chop it. So, this is what came out of it all. photobucket.com/albums/y30/rangerider45/XS%20650/Got it to work...Thx Jeepurze

Really nice! How about some details. Did you do the frame? To put the picture in a post, copy the url of the thumbnail image that you want to include in your post. Then when writing your post, click on the little picture that's fourth from left on the second line odf the add tags section. it wiil show the img tags- put your cursor in the middle of the two, and paste. Thanks for the help Jeepurze and hooktool. I tried it out and as you can see I finally was able to post a photo and a link. I've had a few questions so here's an attempt to answer them. Black Widow Choppers built the hardtail (5" extention/nice work and he answered a lot of questions) and I did everything else. I did the black paint and flame job with rattle cans. So it would withstand spilled fluids and gas I bought a spray gun and applied several coats of clear enamel w/hardners over the entire paint job. I did the wiring with Ken Maxwell's "Yamaha 650 Wiring Explained " CD and bought the battery box from our northern neighbors at Orange Brothers Choppers in Canada. The Boyer/B ignition and about everything else came from my heros at Mike's XS. I built the round electric box out of 6" black plastic pipe. A little Armour all and it shines without being painted and to open it just pull the caps off the end. My reg/rec and Boyer/B is in it. I built the forward controls using Horton's how to article in issue#4 of "Underground Choppers Magazine." The exhaust is MAC with home made baffles and pipe mounts on the lower frame with JC Whitney turnouts on the end of the MACS. The seat and springs are from Flyright Choppers in Texas. The front end is 6" Forks by Franks with a stock size, straight tread tire and a 160 Dunlop on the rear. The 160 has about 3/16" chain clearance...so far so good. I lined the chain guard with some kind of hard plastic to hopefully ward off any bad chain slap...again, so far so good. After the chain stretches a little I'll adjust the rear fender to fit the tire like a glove. Thank you XS Garage (and another forum I frequent) and everyone I heckled for answers to questions. I didn't have the knowledge to do this on my own without a lot of mistakes... photobucket.com/albums/y30/rangerider45/

Thanks for the details. You did a great job. So is it now yours, or your son's? ;D

When this began 3 years ago it was my sons bike (on the XVS). He helped start the chopper, but moved from home to work on a ranch and I finished it. I bought the chopper from him so he had a down payment for a 1100 V Star and with the idea my youngest son could ride the chopper to high school. Between us we now have the whole Yamaha family. A 1975 XS, a 1986 XV and a 2005 XVS. At any rate we all take turns on the 650 as it's a lot of fun to ride. Har, har my wife says I've spent enough money and now she gets a new couch.

Is this in a book or online? Beautiful work!

Where did you get your chain guard?
As yet I have not been able to find one long enough for my chopper.
It is the only piece I like before the safety sticker nazis will inspect my chopper.

Hey Mo650 The forward controls "How To" article is in issue #4 of the Chopper Underground Magazine. I will try to get it scanned or photocopied or something to mail it to you. They are simple, cheap and easy to build. Give me a few days to get it done and then get back to ya on this. Charlie

Dill J, The chain guard is an aftermarket Triumph extended guard. A lot of the parts on this bike are Triumph and I bought it from Triumph Wizard on eBay. If you haven't already and are looking for bike parts you should get signed up on eBay because he has one for sale right now $49.99. I'm not sure if the link I provided below will work unless you are signed up. Anyway, I hope it works for ya. Beautiful bike by the way...I've admired it many times as you know. Great bike, looks like a lot of hard work. My little brother just got a gs500 so now he rides with me and dad. Riding w/family is just one of the finer things in life I'd say.
