Just a quick hello from Springville NY. Old Harley/ Triumph and now xs650 rider here. I still got the Harley, wish I still had the Triumph but the xs650 is now in my blood. I hope to be using this board often...................BG

Hey thanks 5twins and Bob Dammit. The bike is an 81 xs650sh. Its got 5700 on the odometer and had a few owners before me. I drove it a few days and discovered a fuel leak at the petcock so I removed the tank and ordered a petcock from Mikes XS that has on / off / and reserve. While the tank is off I flushed out some very minor rust and will probably seal the tank with Kreem unless I find something better. 5 twins, I'm right off the 219 at the Rice Rd exit. Bob Dammit, my daughterinlaws parents live in Jamestown so you are not that far either. Right now it is snowing GRRRRRRRRRRR I will try and post some pictures but I have slow dial up so it takes forever.....................BG

No Kream. I have read enough horror stories about Kream that I would not consider using it. I have heard just as many stories defending Kream but obviously the product needs careful attention or it's trouble.
Consider leaving the tank in bare steel since you will be taking care of the bike. It is a classic after all. Use only a paper element fuel filter to assure not even the tiniest idle jet plugging dirt gets through the filter.
Did I say "Nice find!" ? Well it certainly is.

Wow, that's a beauty. Mine don't usually look that good when I bring them home I haven't seen a 650 in any of the area classifieds lately. Did you get it locally? We are really close. I'm in the N.E. section of Hamburg by the fairgrounds. You're in the perfect location for a 650. It's not the greatest highway bike but is just perfect for back country roads. If you like to tinker, you've found the perfect bike. I see you discovered MikesXS for parts. There's also a place called 650Central and , of course, eBay. I'll send you a PM with my phone # and we can hook up when the weather gets nice if you like.

Thanks tom terrific for the tip. I have heard that the Kreem can be problematic if the preparation is done poorly. I have ordered the paper fuel filter and will be installing that along with the new petcock. 5twins, I purchased the bike locally from craigslist and just happened to call within hours of it being posted. Usually I'm a day late and a dollar short but not this time, I hit it just right. I was a mechanic for Niagara Mohawk for 35 yrs so tinkering is what I do best. I found both mikes xs and 650 central while surfing. Lots of great ideas out there thats for sure. Not sure if I will leave the bike stock or change some things to suit my tastes. Send me your phone # and I can give you a holler once the weather gets nice and the salt is washed away.............BG
