Basic "regular" petrol here is 95 RON, you can't buy anything lower grade, this will transpose to 91 octane by the (R+M)/2 method. some branded outlets (Shell, BP etc) also have premium grades which vary between 97-98 RON, specifically for M series BM's, AMG Merc's and the like, my XS doesn't like this stuff, bogs down at higher RPM as though it's way rich.
The only engine problems that have been documented have been on some BMW and Jag car engines in the early-mid 90's where some additive attacked the Nikasil bores on these motors, as far as I can remember, these motors were replaced under warranty by the manufacturers.
I've not heard anything about holed pistons (other than due to mechanical issues unrelated to fuel grade).
My advice to all you on the other side of the Atlantic is don't use 87 octane, an extra 20 cents a gallon is cheap insurance, think youselves lucky that you still have (relatively) cheap fuel, we're paying £6.00 a gallon.
deadlykittin: loses compression after the first kick. Ontop of that, i noticed it 1, wont go into neutral when sitting still. and now it dies after getting it started in neutral and going into gear
