As some of you may have read I'm getting into foundry work and will be melting aluminum.
If any of you have ANY aluminum parts that have come off a genuine xs650 that never have ANY chance of being fixed or used again, SAVE THEM BY ALL MEANS. DO NOT THROW THEM OUT.
I eventually want to use old xs650 metal to make new parts or items for xs650 owners.
Let me know if you have anything, I of course will pay shipping, and if it's enough poundage may even be able to pay you some money for scrap value.
I'm still working on getting a job and cash flow so if you don't mind putting it in a box and letting it hang around the shop till I can pay the shipping and what not, that would be much appreciated.

Is the requirement that they have to be off an XS650 a matter of sentiment, or?
I have a left side engine cover that is useless. The gearshift shaft was frozen solid to it, and I broke the cover removing it from the motor. So it's scrap. I also have a set of engine cases, I'll probably never use. Same motor, had to drill out one of the studs, and ended up buggering up the top case half. Repairable, but I scored another set of cases for cheap. I might have something else laying around here.
Reason why I was asking is because I also have a primary cover off a Sportster that is cracked, thus scrap. Let me know if you have any use for it, and I'll toss it in.
Best,
Michael

The XS650 metal is to be kept separate, I want to create a stockpile of it for when I have an XS650 related project I deem worthy of it. Any other aluminum from other bikes, depending on shipping costs, is still welcome and will be used for my "normal" projects. The aluminum found on any motorcycle is of very good quality for making castings with. You can put it in the same box just put the xs650 and other stuff in separate bags or something. The USPS makes flat rate boxes that can have a max of 70 lbs of material in there. Now your asking yourself, how can I fit a busted crankcase or something in that box? Depends how much effort you want to put into it. If the metal is thin enough it can be broken with a sledgehammer. (RELIEVE THAT STRESS!) You can use a jig saw or sawzall with a metal cutting blade. (catch those shavings in something, and put them in a bag! If you have an old, round bottom bbq grill, or something else that can hold a fire, you can use some wood and charcoal to make a large fire. You put the piece of aluminum in it. (Wear safety glasses, gloves, etc) The idea is to get the metal to the point of "hot shortness" but not melt. This is easy to do with almost any fuel. When the metal is at hot shortness you can lift it out with pliers put it on the ground and hit it with a sledge or large hammer which will easily break it in small pieces. PS: I've heard of log splitters being used to bust up aluminum transmission cases and alloy wheels.

Cooltouch... If you still have a trashed set of cases. I could use just a bit of the top half. Check my Stupid trick post.... here. xs650temp.proboards29.com/index.cgi?board=dumb&action=display&thread=9421I would like to get a new chunk welded in some time in the future. I need to scrounge up the piece first... (before it gets Melted down ) Moya... Will gladly donate two completly trashed XS650 fork lowers to your foundry or (trade for a chunk of top case ;D.) I'd even gladly pay shipping to get it done. Brian...
