Actually, the alternator DOES do AC; that's what "alternator" means, for automotive/marine/aircraft engines. A DC unit is called a generator. There's a rectifier/regulator circuit on automobiles which turns the AC into DC. If you can find some way to (selectively) bypass the rectifier, you should get usable AC current.
